Flower for the Day Penstemon 6-29-21
We have had tall penstemon for over a month. This prolific native is also called beardtongue. It is in the largest genus of flowering plants endemic to North America and is in the expanded family Plantaginaceae. Its most prominent feature is its staminoid, an infertile stamen, which is a long hairy filament extending to the mouth of the corolla giving the appearance of a fuzzy tongue. You can see the filament but not the hairs.
