As the ice calves off it creates interesting navigational challenges.
For arctic voyages, ships then and now have an officer called the Ice Captain who takes over the ship in problematic ice. The Ice Captain with the binoculars has charge of the ship.
Lancaster Sound is the most famous thoroughfare into the Canadian Archipelago from Baffin Bay used by British arctic explorers. It was named by explorer William Baffin in 1616 for Sir James Lancaster one of his financial supporters. The Inuit have relied on the Sounds natural resources for food, clothing and shelter for
thousands of years.
