Just when I said we were through with lilies we got a surprise as in Surprise Lily (Lycoris squamigera), this plant in the amaryllis family. Long green leaves in April and May die away. The flowers appear dramatically from the ground on long stalks in July (and usually) August - a true surprise.
They are also called naked ladies.
