We have a friendly black snake at the Lake House. He is over six feet long and lives under our front porch. Yesterday we saw his urban relative in the side yard. To our amazement we watched as it went to the nearby tree and started climbing up it. Here he is at over six feet from the ground.
And now higher.

Then he disappeared into the upper limbs well over ten feet high. Yes, black snakes are excellent climbers (I found out) and frequently ascend trees either to escape predators or in search of birds eggs. They do this using specialized keeled scales and strong muscles to grip the bark. I will think twice next time I walk under this tree.
