Flower for the Day Tulips 3-31-21

I am not a tulip guy but it was fun to get out my tulip flag which matches my 

red tulips. 

Unfortunately the new tulip hybrids act more like annuals than perennials. They just don't come back the next year.

Flower for the Day Bluet 3-30-21

After several showers the wildflowers  have popped in the meadow behind our house. I especially love the miniature bluets (Houstonia cerulea). They are also called Quaker Ladies and are in the rubiaceae family. The bluets can cover broad expanses turning the meadow blue. The tiny flowers are pale blue with yellow centers.

 And is it stamina
that unseasonably freaks
forth a bluet, a
Quaker lady, by
the lake? So small,
a drop of sky that
splashed and held,
four-petaled, creamy
in its throat. The woods
around were brown,
the air crisp as a
Carr's table water
biscuit and smelt of
cider. There were frost
apples on the trees in
the field below the house.
The pond was still, then
broke into a ripple.
The hills, the leaves that
have not yet fallen
are deep and oriental
rug colors. Brown leaves
in the woods set off
gray trunks of trees.
But that bluet was
the focus of it all: last
spring, next spring, what
does it matter? Unexpected
as a tear when someone
reads a poem you wrote
for him: "It's this line
here." That bluet breaks
me up, tiny spring flower
late, late in dour October.

Flower for the Day Fig Buttercup 3-29-21

I have been making a path beside the stream bed behind our house for months. In the midst of the fray I looked down

and found this beautiful little yellow wild flower. It is a fig buttercup (Ficaria verna), also known as lesser celandine or pilewort. It is a low-growing, hairless perennial flowering plant in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It has fleshy dark green, heart-shaped leaves and distinctive flowers with bright yellow, glossy petals. It looks harmless but is said to be both Invasive and Toxic. I have not seen it before.

I am still mesmerized by this frog.

Flower for the Day Hyacinth Explosion 3-25-21

Over the last three days there has been a explosion of colorful hyacinths (Hyacinthus orientalis) in the Gnome Garden.

It is interesting that they have all come out exactly at the same time.

Hyacinth was a divine Greek mythological hero accidentally killed by an errant discus thrown 

by Apollo. Apollo made a flower out of the dead youth's  spilled blood.

Living with an artist is exciting. You never know what will show up. This work is in the spa at the Lake House. Its really wonderful unless you want to play doubles and you only have three paddles.
