Trip to Ute Meadow 8-25-14

Starting at the Upper Beaver Meadow Trailhead Ken Oldham

and I hiked the trail to Ute Meadow.

As we gained elevation we had exceptional views of Notchtop,

 
Longs Peak, and Spearhead with its connection to Chiefshead.

We had a glorious day. Here is Ken in Ute Meadow, a  
place of serenity.

Here I am in Ute Meadow with the path to Trail Ridge behind me.

On the way back we had a good view of burned out Cub Lake (center). We could see the path of the Fern Lake fire as it skipped several areas on its way down toward the 

entrance of the national park.

Flower for the Day Forget Me Nots 9-24-14

Forget Me Nots (Myosotis) have shown up in several of the wildflower gardens.Supposedly they bloom in the spring in moist soil. These just bloomed and in dry soil.

This little insect was hovering.

I didn't put any seeds out this year but my celosia came up in spectacular fashion. You can see why its other name is coxcomb.

Well although suburban deer do not eat chrysanthemums, those in the country love those yellow blooms.

Flower for the Day Rose of Sharon 9-19-14

The Rose of Sharon has bloomed well this year. I prune it back

severely to allow light into the living room in the summer.

Flower for the Day Morning Glory 9-15-14

This is what happened after I purchased 2 small Morning Glory plants (Total$3.50) at a Garden Club sale. The vines are taking over the front porch and swing. Morning Glory (Ipomea) is one of a thousand species of flowering plants in the Convolvulaceae Family.

The blue and purple blossoms open in direct sunlight and the

edges of the flowers start to curl by noon. A very hardy and 

beautiful plant.

Flower for the Day Verbena 9-11-14

Verbena (Vervain) is a wonderful plant with small flowers which continue to bloom in the summer for months. The Pawnee Indians used this plant to enhance their visions. We could all use such enhancement.

Flower for the Day Dahlia 9-8-14

Finally after a summer of waiting the dahlias are beginning to bloom.They will do this until the frost.

Flower for the Day We have triplets. 9-2-14

We are home from Colorado in time for triplets. All three of the

buds on our mature night blooming cereus opened in full darkness

in unison over a one hour time span. 

Two are in a very intimate position with each other.

Open, they have spectacular features.

The only light that they had was from the half moon.

The stalk of the bud emerges from the free edge of the leaf.

They will stay open all night and will close with dawns light. 

This is the only time the plant will bloom this year.
