Flower for the Day Downy Wood Mint 6-20

Downy wood mint (Blephillia ciliata) showed up in my front garden unannounced several years ago.

It is an herbaceous perennial in the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is also called Ohio horsemint, sunny woodman, and down pagoda plant. Carl Linnaeus called this Monada ciliata before George Bentham gave it its current binomial name.

Interestingly it arose in an area where a  monarda (bee balm) plant had disappeared.
