Flower for the Day 10-28 Dahlia

This Cardinal red dahlia is new this year and was a very late bloomer. It will not make it tofull bloom because of the freeze. It is certainly an attention getter.

Flower for the Day 10-21 Sedum

The sedum plant was eaten by the deer this earlier summer. The stalks which were usually carried to the ground by the weight of the leaves and flowers remained more upright. The blossoms not knowing about this began blooming from the stalks this week-end.

Smaller ......

but just as beautiful.

Flower for the Day 10-15 Aster

The flower heads of these asters have been eaten back regularly by the deer since late June. They have finally broken through with a mass bloom. Aster is from the Ancient Greek for star.

Notice the various stages of the capitulum (pseudanthium).

Flower for the Day 10-7 Blackberry Lily Seed Pod

These seed pods are really great and hang around for more than a month. The
blackberry lily which is in the iris family re-seeds itself very successfully. Come by
and help yourself to some at the end of the driveway.

Flower for the Day 10-2 Globe Amaranth

These showy little annual flowers are growing at the edge of the field. I usually have them in containers where they get more regular watering. As a result they are smaller than usual but still fun.

Flower for the Day 10-1 Asters

These asters are growing six feet tall in the wildflower garden. Bumble bees are
extraordinarily busy at this time of the year.
